Employee Spotlight: Kayla – Design & Production Manager

At ModernRugs.com, every custom rug is the result of teamwork, creativity, and a sharp eye for detail. This month, we’re excited to spotlight Kayla, our Design and Production Manager, who has been with the company for over seven years.

Kayla’s role bridges both the artistic and logistical sides of our work. On any given day, she might be creating custom artwork for client proposals, coordinating with our weavers on in-production orders, submitting new projects to production, or ensuring our social networks reflect the beauty of what we create.

Her background in art and graphic design has given her a strong foundation in color, composition, and aesthetics, but Kayla believes it’s her “soft skills” that truly set her apart. “Attention to detail, time management, and staying calm under pressure are all just as important as design itself,” she says. Whether interpreting feedback that isn’t always crystal clear, pivoting when a project takes a new direction, or keeping things on track with a tight deadline, Kayla thrives in the fast-paced, ever-changing world of custom rug design.

What she finds most rewarding is seeing the client’s reaction. “It’s always a giveaway that I’ve done my job well when the client tells us we’ve exceeded their expectations—not just in design, but in speed, service, and quality.”

Outside of work, Kayla draws inspiration from both nature and her creative hobbies. She loves hiking with her dogs, exploring the outdoors, and fueling her imagination through fantasy art and weekly Dungeons & Dragons games. This balance of discipline and creativity shines through in the whimsical yet thoughtful approach she brings to her work.

For Kayla, the best part of her role is the variety: “One day we may design something minimal and neutral, and the next, a bold, bright statement piece. The unpredictability keeps things exciting.”
